Bass family photographs, 1875-1933, 1980 (bulk 1890-1920).

Photographs and photograph albums relating to William W. and Ada Bass, their family, and their life and tourist business at the Grand Canyon. There are images of camp sites, mining prospectors, tourist groups, and pack trains. Transportation scenes include the Bass Cable Ferry above the Canyon, carts and carriages, automobiles, pack mules, and boats. Photographs of Havasupai Indians include school children, homes, dancers, and a sweat lodge; Hopi Indian images include a trip to Hotevilla and a Snake Dance; and there are images of Navajo selling blankets. Photographer F.H. Maude took several of the photographs and a lantern slide lecture series. Photographs by anthropologist and travel writer George Wharton James, include a series of William Bass at work in the Canyon. A few images by the Kolb Brothers are also present. There are many scenic views of trails, falls, the river and canyons. Tourists and family friends represented include William Hearst, Thomas Moran, George Wharton James, Tom Mix, Capt. Jack Crawford, and John Waltenburg.
